The Kyoritsu KEW 5410 is a tester for residual current devices or RCDs, that is used to assess and gauge the functionality of ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs. An RCD is a type of electrical safety device that guards against electric shock by sensing and breaking a circuit as soon as a leak or current imbalance is detected.
An RCD is a safety mechanism that senses an imbalance between live conductors and automatically cuts off the electrical supply. The device tracks the current differential between the active and neutral conductors in a single-phase circuit.
The total current in the line and neutral conductors is zero in a healthy circuit, meaning that there is neither protective conductor current nor fault current flowing to Earth. Thus, some of the line conductor currents will not return through the neutral conductor in the event of a line-to-earth fault.
When the residual current reaches a predetermined limit, known as the “residual operating current,” the RCD operates, monitors this difference, and disconnects the circuit. The Kyoritsu 5410 assesses this.
