PCE-CPT 20 Surface Testing – Cupping Tester for Coating Flexibility

The PCE-CPT 20 cupping tester is a device designed to evaluate the flexibility of surface coatings like paints, lacquers, varnishes, and protective layers on sheet metal. It is commonly utilized in manufacturing, paint shops, and quality control settings to assess the formability, ductility, adhesion, and elongation properties of coatings. This tester is essential for gauging the strength, durability, and elasticity of coatings.

The cupping test, mandatory in Qualicoat and QIB certified quality control labs and also known as the Erichsen test or dent test, involves using a spherical punch to deform a metal sample, creating a cup-shaped bulge. To conduct this test with the PCE-CPT 20, in compliance with ISO 1520 standards, the coated side of the sample must face upwards, allowing the 20 mm spherical punch to impact the bare metal side underneath. The test concludes once minor cracks or detachments appear on the bulged area.
